Most pipelines don’t fail at the end.
They fail at the beginning.
Deals enter the pipeline too early.
Too weak.
Too vague.

This is what I call the Deal Qualification Gap.

Reps are under pressure to build pipeline.

Anything that “looks promising” gets added.
A good conversation becomes an opportunity.
A bit of interest becomes a deal.
A maybe becomes a forecast number.

You have a qualification problem.
The Quick Win – Close the Qualification Gap
Introduce one simple rule.
No deal enters the pipeline without evidence.
Not opinion.
Not gut feel.
Evidence.
At a minimum, every deal should have:
Clear problem identified
Defined decision maker
Confirmed timeline
Evidence of budget or commercial intent
If any of these are missing, it is not yet a deal.
It is a conversation.
Practical Example
A rep logs a new opportunity.
“They’re really interested.”
You ask:
“What problem are they trying to solve?”
Silence.
That deal should not be in your pipeline.
Instead, coach the rep to go back and qualify properly:
“Can you help me understand what is driving the need for this right now?”
Now you move from assumption to evidence.
That is where real pipeline quality begins.
Mini Checklist
✔ Is there a clearly defined problem
✔ Is the decision maker known
✔ Is there a real timeline
✔ Is there commercial intent
✔ Would you confidently forecast this deal
Why This Matters
Sales Directors are no longer judged on pipeline size.
They are judged on pipeline quality and forecast reliability.
The strongest teams don’t have the biggest pipelines.
They have the cleanest ones.
